 Youth Program Internship

The Youth Programs Intern assists the Educations Programs staff, which is responsible for the day-to-day operations and ongoing development of the Society’s national educational programs. The Youth Programs Intern will work closely with the Education staff on youth programs that are locally, nationally, and internationally focused. Specifically the Youth Programs Intern will assist in the planning and coordination of the 15th Annual National Children & Youth Garden Symposium, which will be held in Chaska, Minnesota, July 19 – 21, 2007.

The intern will also assist with children’s programs at the Society’s national headquarters, including school group tours, the children’s garden, and other related projects. One such project is The Growing Connection, a pilot program that is a joint effort of the American Horticultural Society and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The Demonstration Garden is part of the first phase of this exciting project. The Growing Connection is developed for Middle School students, age 10 –12. Through a series of activities, participants learn about the science of growing food plants, nutrition and sustainability.

The duration of this internship is a minimum twelve weeks, between May 15 – August 31, 2007. Compensation is $9.00/hr. The workweek is 37.5 hours and is Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Housing is the responsibility of the intern. Assistance in finding accommodations is provided with a listing of potential rentals, affordable apartment office contacts, and a map of the area.

The Youth Programs Internship is funded by the 2007 ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program. To qualify for the internship, the applicant must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student who will be returning to college as a full time (minimum of 12 credits per semester) sophomore, junior, or senior student in the fall of 2007 in a U.S. college or university. International students need to be eligible to work in the United States.
