Contemporary Sources for Pottery and Metalwork in the Arts and Crafts Movement Style

As described in Rick Darke's article in the November/December 2000 issue of The American Gardener, Bok Tower Gardens is a sanctuary for native Florida plants and animals, as well as a showcase for decorative arts. Its commanding bell tower features fine examples of work influenced by the nature-inspired Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century.

The door of the tower features brass panels by metalworker Samuel Yellin embellished with motifs that depict the story of the Creation. In the grillwork outside the tower and in a floor mural inside, the theme continues in colorful, intricate tilework installed by the Enfield Pottery and Tileworks. Here, trees, birds, turtles, and other plants and animals have been transformed into art through skillful craftsmanship of metal and tile.

The Enfield Pottery and Tileworks is no longer in operation, but Yellin's tradition of craftsmanship is continued at the Samuel Yellin Metalworkers Company (see below). A handful of other companies continue to make architectural and garden products in the same tradition.
