White House Gates #1

The AHS’s set of former White House gates was part of the entrance display at the 2005 Philadelphia Flower Show, held from March 6-13. The fully restored historic gates and the red, white, and blue floral color scheme reflected the show’s theme, "America the Beautiful."

White House Gates #2

The gates, each weighing around 900 pounds, were painstakingly repaired and preserved by Flaherty Iron Works of Alexandria, Virginia, and Conservation Solutions, Inc., based in Washington, D.C. As a final step, the gates were painted their original dark green color, which conservators identified from remains of paint on the iron.

White House Gates #3

Trish Gibson, AHS Events Manager and Curator of Buildings (left) and Tom Underwood, AHS Director of Horticultural Programs (right), coordinated the restoration of the historic White House gates to their original condition. Here, they stand with Arabella Dane, Chairman of the AHS Board of Directors (center), in front of one of the gates that welcomed visitors to the show.
