The American
Horticultural Society President
Katy Moss Warner Retires
Alexandria, VA – March 17, 2006.
After four
years as president and chief executive officer
of the American Horticultural Society (AHS),
Katy Moss Warner has announced her retirement
effective June 3, 2006. Under Warner's
leadership, the AHS has increased its
membership, developed many new national
educational programs, and created a Master
Plan for transforming its headquarters at
George Washington's River Farm into a center
for American horticulture. "The AHS is a
dynamic organization that is making vital
contributions to the science and art of
gardening in America," says Warner. "I am
proud to have been actively involved with the
AHS over the last 14 years first as a board
member and then as president."
"Through her leadership, Katy Moss Warner has
revitalized our organization and created
significant alliances with green industry
groups and horticultural professionals," says
Arabella Dane, chair of the AHS Board of
Directors. "Her passionate commitment to
raising public awareness of the importance of
plants and gardens is an inspiration to us
all."
At the request of the AHS Board, Warner has
agreed to continue to represent the AHS as
president emeritus. "Katy has brought a great
deal of talent and strength to the AHS and I
look forward to collaborating with her in this
new role," says Susie Usrey, who in July will
succeed Dane as AHS Board Chair. "This will be
an exciting opportunity to build upon the
momentum Katy has established over the last
four years."
Prior to becoming president of the AHS, Warner
was the director of horticulture and
environmental initiatives at the Walt Disney
World Resort in Florida, where she worked for
24 years. While at Disney, she joined the AHS
Board of Directors in 1992 and served as Board
Chair from 1998 to 2000.
Warner currently serves on the Board of
Directors for America In Bloom and is an
active member of several professional
organizations, including the American Public
Gardens Association, the American Society of
Landscape Architects, and the Florida Nursery,
Growers and Landscape Association. She has
received numerous awards for her achievements,
including the Margaret Douglas award from the
Garden Club of America and the Award of
Excellence from the National Garden Clubs.
A national search for a replacement for Warner
is now underway. Tom Underwood, currently
chief operating officer of the AHS, will serve
as acting CEO until a new president is named.
