American Horticultural Society and Junior Master Gardener Program Co-Sponsor New Awards Program for Children's Garden Books

Alexandria, VA – August, 2005.

The American Horticultural Society (AHS) and the Junior Master Gardener (JMG) Program presented the first “Growing Good Kids – Excellence in Children’s Literature Awards” on July 28, 2005 at the AHS National Children & Youth Garden Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia.

This new award honors “engaging, inspiring works of garden and ecology-themed children’s books… recognizing books with both a powerful story and moving illustrations” says Randy Seagraves, national curriculum coordinator for JMG.
In this, the first year of the awards, 40 “Classic” books published during the last century received the awards. The list of “Classic” award winners is included below. Publishers of these books can use a special “Growing Good Kids” award sticker to indicate award-winning books.

Starting in 2006, the award will honor books published in the previous year and may include categories such as non-fiction and age-specific books. The award selection committee includes youth gardening specialists from AHS and JMG as well as teachers and children. To nominate a title for the 2006 award, please click here.
AHS Director of Communications, David J. Ellis, says “It is our hope that these award winning books will inspire the next generation of gardeners to explore, enjoy, and take care of the natural world around them.”

For more information, contact David J. Ellis of AHS at 703-768-5700 ext. 122 or dellis@ahs.org; or Randy Seagraves of JMG at (979) 845-8565 or randy@jmgkids.org. Photographs of this year’s award ceremony are available upon request.
