The
American Horticultural Society offers opportunities to
explore horticulture and gardens across America and
around the world through the AHS Travel Study Program.

The AHS’s annual President’s Council
trip is headed to Portland, Oregon, to the familiar
surrounds of Susie Usrey, the Society’s chair of the
Board of Directors. Susie and the Underwoods will
introduce you to Portland’s diverse landscape. We will
have the rare opportunity to visit Susie and Bruce
Usrey’s private garden. And a visit to Monrovia nursery
will provide plenty of inspiration for your personal
garden plus we’ll get a sneak peek at some of its newest
plant introductions. We will also explore The Oregon
Garden with more that 20 specialty gardens, including a
Conifer Garden which features one of the largest
collections of dwarf and miniature conifers in the
country. And for the rose lovers, we will visit
Portland’s International Rose Test Garden, the oldest
official, continuously operated public rose test garden
in the United States. Also on the itinerary are the
Portland Classical Chinese Garden and some of Portland’s
finest private gardens and retail garden centers. The
accommodations for this trip will be The Governor Hotel,
a historic landmark luxury hotel in downtown Portland.
This tour will highlight the rich
horticultural treasures of the Hudson Valley and the art
that compliments the landscape. Highlights will include
Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Springwood and Eleanore
Roosevelt’s Val-Kill; Olana, the estate of famed Hudson
River School artist Frederic Edwin Church; and from
Lisburne Grange, a private estate designed by Fletcher
Steele to Manitoga ,the modernist home and woodland
quarry garden of America’s industrial designer, Russel
Wright We will also visit Storm King Art Center, which
showcases a fabulous collection of contemporary
sculpture including: Calder, David Smith, Noguchi,
Goldsworthy and Dia: Beacon, a museum for Dia Art
Foundation's renowned of art from the 1960s to the
present. Autumn color will be the backdrop for the tour,
one that you won’t want to miss. The accommodations for
this trip will be The Thayer Hotel, a historic hotel
overlooking the Hudson River.
