American
gardeners routinely face opportunities to make
environmentally conscious decisions. The AHS Green Garage aims to help gardeners recognize and seize
these opportunities by showcasing the tools, equipment,
materials, and techniques that support sustainable
gardening. The Green Garage is designed to challenge and
encourage gardeners to make earth-friendly choices while
creating and maintaining a beautiful and thriving garden.
These
concepts are brought to life in the permanent Green Garage
display at River Farm, the AHS's headquarters. The display
consists of a garage structure filled with earth-friendly
garden tools and products, surrounded by regionally
appropriate, low maintenance plants.
The Green Garage also travels to flower shows around the
country. It first appeared in the 2006 Philadelphia Flower
Show, where it won the Best in Show Award for educational
exhibits by non-academic organizations and the Special
Achievement Award from the Garden Club Federation of
Pennsylvania.
Next, it appeared in the 2007 Northwest Flower & Garden
Show, taking a bronze medal. To view a list of plants used

Flower & Garden Show.

The AHS is grateful to the many people and companies who
made the Green Garage display at the 2007 Northwest Flower &
Garden Show possible, but special thanks go to Will and
Hadley, the AHS's young helpers at the show who
enthusiastically volunteered to greet visitors and hand out
brochures.
The Green Garage also appears in the AHS’s magazine,
The American Gardener,
as a department that focuses on current research, new
gardening products, and efficient strategies that can help
people to create safe and environmentally friendly gardens.
