Our Host, George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate &
Gardens

Mount Vernon was the beloved home of
George and Martha Washington from the time of their
marriage in 1759 until General Washington's death in
1799. Opened to the public in 1860, the plantation rests
on the banks of the Potomac River just 16 miles south of
Washington, D.C., and eight miles south of Old Town
Alexandria, Virginia. Today, roughly 500 acres of this
historic estate have been preserved, including 20
structures and 50 acres of gardens, as they existed in
1799. Visitors can also experience the newly opened
Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center and the
Ford Orientation Center featuring 25 new theaters and
galleries that tell the detailed story of George
Washington's life.
