You are invited to “The Amazing World of Plants: New
Trends in Plant Selection and Their Influence on Garden
Design”
Explore the latest trends in plant breeding and learn
from the pros how new introductions, along with
time-tested classics, can be integrated into landscapes
with this exclusive AHS Garden School. “The Amazing
World of Plants: New Trends in Plant Selection and Their
Influence on Garden Design” will take place at Yew Dell
Gardens, the former estate of the late plantsman
Theodore Klein.
Guest Horticulturist Graham Rice, a noted garden
writer, will be your host as you meet and get personal
instruction from nationally renowned horticultural
experts.
The Garden School will begin with a field study of
notable landscapes in the Louisville area, including a
tour of the remarkable plant collection at Louisville’s
historic Cave Hill Cemetery, as well as private gardens.
In the evening, you will return to Yew Dell Gardens for
a reception and dinner followed by Graham Rice’s
presentation on “Transatlantic Perennials,” during which
Graham will look at the selection and development of
wild perennials into garden plants on both sides of the
Atlantic.
On the second day, horticulturist Natalia Hamill
will highlight garden-worthy native perennials, ferns,
grasses, and vines along with exciting new selections of
these plants during “American Plants for American
Gardens: A Look at Natives and New Native Selections.”
Next, fourth-generation nurseryman Roy Klehm will
inspire you with “Notable Woody Plants for the
Landscape.” Afterwards, Sue Amatangelo from Ball
Horticultural Company will introduce you to “Annuals:
New Varieties Along with the Tried and True.” After
lunch, Graham Rice will reveal “New and
Unfamiliar Vines for the Garden.” As the Garden School
draws to a close, garden designer Elin Haaga will
help you apply your new knowledge with a design
workshop, “Finding Your Own Garden Style.”
Through these presentations, demonstrations, and other
specially planned activities, you will learn practical
tips and techniques for integrating new introductions
along with time-tested classics into landscapes.
