AHS Garden School
The Art & Science of Garden Photography

You are invited to “The Art & Science of Garden Photography”

Sharpen your skills, recharge your creativity, and immerse yourself in the intricacies of garden photography with this exclusive AHS Garden School. “The Art & Science of Garden Photography” will take place at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, one of North America’s premier botanical gardens dedicated to protecting and preserving North America's native plants and natural landscapes.

Join Guest Horticulturist Robert Bowden of Orlando’s Harry P. Leu Gardens to learn more about the art and science of garden photography. Robert will share his vast knowledge of photography and how to effectively capture the garden through photos. He will also be your host as you meet and get personal instruction from nationally renowned industry pros and horticultural experts.

On the first day of the Garden School, build a foundation of photography vocabulary with Brian Loflin through “The Language of Photography.” Robert Bowden will share the current “Trends in Garden Photography” as he tells of his experience with film versus digital photography. Award-winning photographers Alan and Linda Detrick will explore “The Art of Seeing” with a multimedia presentation illustrating the many different ways to see an object. After lunch, join Mark Simmons for “Capturing a Sense of Place: The Plants and Ecology of Central Texas,” followed by “Macro Photography Basics” with Robert Bowden. As the afternoon skies soften you will embark on a field study at Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The day will conclude with a remarkable evening with Southern Living magazine’s Senior Garden Photographer Van Chaplin, as he shares his visionary approach to capturing images during “How to Find a Photograph: Glimpses of Life All Around Us For the Taking”

The study of the art and science of garden photography will continue on the second day with an early morning photo shoot at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Following the photo shoot, Alan and Linda Detrick will share their wealth of experience in “Capturing Landscape Elements Through Photography.” Next, learn how to set the stage in your very own garden with Brian and Shirley Loflin’s discussion of “Garden Design with an Eye for Photography.” And you won’t want to miss Brian and Shirley Loflin’s session on “Publishing Your Garden Images.” As the Garden School draws to a close, Robert Bowden will help you make the most of your newfound expertise with “Success with Garden Photography: Theory into Practice.”

Through these presentations, demonstrations, and specially planned activities, you will gain practical tips and techniques for mastering garden photography.
