“This event was an
immersion in a very specific area of horticulture,” says AHS
President Katy Moss Warner. “Color is both elusive
and exciting. It is important in announcing the garden, and
when used effectively, it exerts tremendous influence over
us.”
The two-day intensive Garden School at River Farm, the
American Horticultural Society’s headquarters, included an
impressive line-up of gardening and color experts. Along
with Katy and AHS President Emeritus Dr. H. Marc Cathey,
these included horticulturist Heather Will-Browne of
Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, garden writer Pamela
Harper, landscape designer Tres Fromme, educator
and author Dr. Allan Armitage, and artist Sara
Poly.
Participants learned invaluable techniques and practical
advice for effectively using color in the garden. They also
visited the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture
Garden for a field study and enjoyed the grounds of River
Farm.
