A day in the life of Kimberly Haun, AHS Youth Programs Coordinator:
One
warm spring day, as thousands of bright daffodils and tulips began
to bloom in our gardens, I joined a group of children who were
visiting the children’s garden at our River Farm headquarters. A
couple of boys – about eight or nine years old – were making use of
the brightly colored shovels we have in the garden and flinging dirt
everywhere. Eager for a new distraction, I showed them how to dig
straight down and bring up worms. The children instantly screamed at
top pitch – making my ears ring – when they found a live worm.
Because they were afraid to touch it, I picked up the worm and
demonstrated that it wouldn’t bite. The boys nervously held out
their hands. Dangling a wriggling worm between their tiny fingers,
they proudly took it to show their Moms, putting it back when done,
of course. For one captivating moment the children were amazed,
taking in the sensations of a beautiful early spring day in the
garden.
